Detention Officer

The Texas City Police Department is always accepting applications for the position of Detention Officer. If you’re a viable candidate a representative will get in contact with you, if positions are available.  

This position is responsible for the supervision of inmates, property, and booking. The position reports to the Jail Supervisor. The current schedule is 12-hour shift work (2 days on - 2 days off, 3 days on - 2 days off, 2 days on – 3 days off).

Hiring Process

  • Applicants chosen to move forward in the hiring process must successfully complete background investigation, and drug/medical screening.

Salary
$20.41 Hourly (Starting Rate)

Example of Duties

  • Provide information and directions to the public.
  • Write reports pertaining to complaints received.
  • Answer the telephones and take messages. Disseminate information to field officers as necessary.
  • Provide meals, clothing, mattresses, blankets, and personal items to prisoners.
  • Conduct searches of prisoners and cells.
  • Maintain physical control of prisoners by using minimal restraint techniques.
  • Accurately type all prisoner, property, medical, court data into Jail Management System.
  • Assists with the cleaning and maintenance of the facility as needed; identifies maintenance and mechanical problems.
  • Manages trustees.
  • Perform all other related duties as assigned.
  • Fingerprint and photograph prisoners and citizens electronically using the AFIS machine (Automated Fingerprint Identification System) or manually using black ink.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • A current Jail Certification standing preferred.
  • Have an acceptable working knowledge of computer operations, stressing accuracy and speed.
  • Possess a Texas Driver's License.
  • Required to attend a First Aid and CPR Training.
  • Required to train with Oleoresin Capsicum (Pepper Spray) which will be experiencing the effects of pepper spray personally and decontaminating.

  • Ability to deal courteously with the public.
  • Some knowledge of the methods and techniques used in the control and custody of prisoners.
  • Ability to act rapidly and calmly in emergencies.
  • Good physical condition, strength, agility, normal vision, and hearing
  • Ability to read and write in English.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of information.
  • Ability to understand and follow moderately complex oral and written instruction.

$23.00 Hourly (Starting Rate)

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS: 

  • Knowledge of or the ability to learn police, fire and EMS emergency response practices and procedures. 
  • Knowledge of or the ability to learn methods, practices and procedures for responding to and dispatching emergency services. 
  • Knowledge of or the ability to learn computers and related equipment, hardware and software for researching, retrieving and maintaining a variety of informational and tracking databases. 
  • Ability to work under high stress and use sound judgment in emergencies. 
  • Ability to be assertive and calm in soliciting information from distressed callers. 
  • Ability to type at a speed necessary for successful job performance. 
  • Ability to quickly assimilate information and implement an appropriate course of action.

QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • High school diploma or GED. 
  • Must have or be able to obtain a basic telecommunications certificate within one year of date of hire. 
  • Must possess a valid Texas driver’s license with an acceptable driving record. 
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills in English. 
  • Must be able to type a minimum of 35 words per minute. 
  • Good organizational skills. 
  • Work without constant direct supervision.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: 

  • Must be able to lift 30 pounds. 
  • Must be able to sit for extended periods often time. 
  • Must be able to climb and stretch to reach areas of the work site for routine cleaning and inspections. 
  • May be subject to frequent repetitive motion such as typing, data entry and extended vision of monitors. 
  • May be exposed to irate and hostile individuals, emergency situations, and a high stress environment

The Selection Process

The selection process is thorough and may take several weeks. All applicants must successfully pass each of the following phases in order to qualify for a position:

  • Applicants meet all City of Texas City eligibility requirements
  • A background investigation is conducted
  • Psychological Evaluation
  • A Medical Examination & Drug Testing is done
  • An offer of employment is made.

If that offer is accepted:

  • Probationary Employee successfully complete a field training program
  • Probationary Employee must demonstrate job proficiency in order to pass a one-year probationary period
